Ocean's Eleven (2001)
This is the film that started it all, or rather, the remake of the 1960 film that reignited the franchise. Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven is the gold standard for modern heist comedies. It's tightly directed, stylish, and features an ensemble cast that you'd want as your own friends. Danny Ocean (George Clooney) just got out of prison and immediately puts together a team to pull off the impossible: a triple Las Vegas casino heist right under the nose of the ruthless Terry Benedict (Andy García). The characters are instantly iconic: from Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt) to Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), and from tech wizard Livingston Dell (Eddie Jemison) to acrobat Yen (Shaobo Qin). Everything from the soundtrack to the twist is perfect. This film is the start of the Ocean's franchise, and it's a modern heist classic.
Ocean's Twelve (2004)
Two words: European vibes. Ocean's Twelve moves the action from the glitz of Las Vegas to the alleys of Amsterdam, the palaces of Rome, and the beaches of the Riviera. The crew has to get back together when Benedict finds them and demands his money back. This sets the stage for some international intrigue, dangerous rivals, and Rusty's ex-girlfriend Isabel Lahiri (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who's got some secrets up her sleeve. The film is more relaxed and fun, and it's a bit experimental with its structure. At the time, this wasn't a hit, but it's since gained a cult following. The addition of Roman Nagel (Eddie Izzard) as a tech genius and a much-discussed cameo make this installment unique within the Ocean's universe. It's a cool spot that gets the crew ready for what's next.
Ocean's Thirteen (2007)
We're back in Vegas, baby. Ocean's Thirteen feels like coming home in a sharp suit. When Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould) gets double-crossed by a sneaky new casino owner, Willy Bank (Al Pacino), it's time for a classic revenge heist storyline. The team dynamic is at its best, the plans are wilder than ever, and the film is bursting with visual flair. Tess isn't in it this time, but Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner) really shines, and the elaborate plan to sabotage a brand-new hotel-casino is a treat. The film ends the original trilogy with a bang, paying homage to the classic casino heist movie and showcasing a tight-knit sense of friendship among these unlikely Robin Hoods.
Ocean's 8 (2018)
Eleven, twelve, thirteen... eight? Yes. Ocean's 8 isn't a typical prequel or sequel. It's a women-led heist spinoff that cleverly taps into the existing Ocean's universe. Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), Danny's sister, puts together her own crew for a risky job at the biggest fashion event of the year: the Met Gala. From Lou (Cate Blanchett) to Nine Ball (Rihanna), Amita (Mindy Kaling), and Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), this crew is just as charming as the guys. Director Gary Ross gives the genre a fresh twist, and while the tone is lighter, the elaborate heist planning is unmistakably Ocean's. You don't need to have seen the earlier films to enjoy this one, but if you're familiar with the trilogy, you'll definitely appreciate the references.
